- Carbohydrates-these provide a source of energy.
- Proteins-these provide a source of materials for growth and repair.
- Fibre-this is required to help your intestines function correctly; it is not digested.
- Minerals salts-these are required for healthy teeth, bones, muscles etc..
- Vitamins-these are required in very small quantities to keep you healthy.
- Fats-these provide a source of energy and contain fat soluble vitamins.
Without these components one can get sicknesses which are known as food deficiency diseases. Examples of food deficiency disease are:
- kwashiorkor
- marasmus
- ricket
- goitre
- scurvy
- beriberi,e.t.c
Eatng too much of these components is not healthy all together. When taken in large amounts they cause sicknesses like:
- obesity
- diabetes
- high-blood pressure
