A Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is considered as the healthy and nourishing way of eating and it means that you have to choose the right foods inthe right prortions from the food groups. A balanced diet must contain the following six nutrients:

  • Carbohydrates-these provide a source of energy.
  • Proteins-these provide a source of materials for growth and repair.
  • Fibre-this is required to help your intestines function correctly; it is not digested.
  • Minerals salts-these are required for healthy teeth, bones, muscles etc..
  • Vitamins-these are required in very small quantities to keep you healthy.
  • Fats-these provide a source of energy and contain fat soluble vitamins.

Without these components one can get sicknesses which are known as food deficiency diseases. Examples of food deficiency disease are:

  • kwashiorkor
  • marasmus
  • ricket
  • goitre
  • scurvy
  • beriberi,e.t.c

Eatng too much of these components is not healthy all together. When taken in large amounts they cause sicknesses like:

  • obesity
  • diabetes
  • high-blood pressure
